The popular steam hauled ‘Fellsman’ returns to the spectacular Settle to Carlisle railway in 2013 for its fifth summer season, running on Wednesday’s over the roof of England – With great limestone peaks and deep valleys the legendary ‘Settle to Carlisle’ line is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering including the great 24 arched viaduct at Ribblehead, with time available for either sightseeing in Carlisle - or an optional tour of the Lake District by vintage coach and cruise on beautiful Ullswater.
The train is steam hauled throughout and the locomotive will be chosen from the historic pool of engines based at Carnforth including: LMS Royal Scot 46115 ‘Scots Guardsman’ – LMS Jubilee 5690 ‘Leander’ – LMS Stanier Black Five 44932 – LMS Jubilee 45699 ‘Galatea’.
The Settle & Carlisle line is known for its magnificent scenery and steep gradient so our engine will be working hard as we climb to the magnificent Ribblehead Viaduct with stunning views of the three peaks. Passengers get a marvellous view down Dent Dale as the train emerges from Blea Moor tunnel and approaching Garsdale you will see sweeping views of Wensleydale - with our engine in full flight we climb at 1 in 100 towards the summit of the line at Ais Gill. Travelling on through the lush Eden Valley to the historic border city of Carlisle where we arrive about 13.00 for a stop of up to two hours. You may choose to stroll between the castle and cathedral or perhaps visit the famous Tullie House Museum – all surrounded by great places to shop, eat or be entertained so creating the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Our train will return from Carlisle about 15.30 and time permitting a photographic and water stop will be made at Appleby prior to the long hard climb over the same spectacular route giving another opportunity to experience the beauty of the high Pennines.
ULLSWATER CRUISE We are pleased to offer an optional tour by leaving the train at Appleby and boarding a classic 1950’s coach for a memorable journey through the spectacular and tranquil Lake District to the pretty village of Glenridding followed with an hour’s cruise by historic steamer on England’s most beautiful lake, Ullswater.
