This is truly a day out to remember as ‘The Statesman’ celebrated train heads into North Wales with a journey along the spectacular coastal route with its sweeping sea views before reversing at Llandudno Junction and climbing high into the Snowdonia National Park and up the stunningly beautiful Conwy Valley with our train passing through a region of haunting beauty and grandeur, of wild rocky mountains, hidden valleys, cascading rivers, still glacial lakes and deep forests. There is the option of spending time at the popular Victorian tourist centre of Betws-y-Coed, or continuing on to Blaenau Ffestiniog. We also have an optional excursion available offering a return steam hauled journey on the famous Ffestiniog Railway.
Our train travels through the Midlands to Crewe before we take the secondary route through the Cheshire plain and Chester, where we pass the Roman Walls crossing the River Dee and soon after we enter Wales running alongside the Irish Sea passing Prestatyn and Rhyl on a coastline famed for its beaches and views. At Llandudno Junction the train reverses for the truly spectacular journey up the beautiful Conwy Valley and into the Snowdonia National Park alongside one of the great rivers of Wales and continues along the banks of the turbulent River Lledr after it’s confluence with the Conwy at the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed where you may break your journey, or remain on board as we continue to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
A breathtaking range of scenery unfolds before us, from historic castles through estuary rich in wildlife, to gentle slopes that give way to majestic crags with views of tumbling waterfalls and high mountains. The high peaks of Snowdonia are on view before our train enters the heart of the mountain and emerges some minutes later in the imposing slate landscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog. It is here you may join our optional tour (see below) or perhaps visit the Llechwedd Slate Caverns (payable locally) situated just outside the town. Our train returns in the late afternoon retracing our journey over the same breathtaking route.
We are pleased to offer the following optional excursion which should be pre-booked at the same time as the main tour as seating is limited to 150 passengers:
The Ffestiniog Railway
Adjacent to the main line station is the terminus of the narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway where our privately chartered vintage steam train will be waiting to take us on a return journey over the highest and most mountainous part of the line to the isolated and beautiful location of Tan-y-Bwlch set in the Snowdonia National Park, there are nature trails to follow through the forest, lakes and streams to investigate, and a wide variety of wildlife to look out for. The station cafe serves a wide selection of hot and cold food and is licensed. This is a truly memorable journey as the little train twists and turns around the mountain side offering spectacular views: Adults £10.50 Children £7.80
