Enjoy a memorable day on board ‘The Statesman’ as we travel around the Cumbrian Coast, probably the most stunningly beautiful scenic coastal line in England through an area steeped in maritime history with spectacular views of the Lake District Mountains and the wide panoramic expanse of Morecambe Bay as we journey to Ravenglass, where there is the opportunity to ride the legendary Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway into the Fells, visit the beautiful Muncaster Castle gardens, or, historic Whitehaven.

Leaving the main line at Carnforth we depart past the ‘Brief Encounter’ Refreshment Room made famous in the classic 1945 movie, after picking up speed we pass Silverdale and cross the first of the two spectacular viaducts over the River Kent at Arnside with stunning views across Morecambe Bay. Continuing through the Victorian resort of Grange-over-Sands and Ulverston we continue across the Furness peninsula where the views of the Irish Sea and Lakeland Mountains are truly spectacular before arriving at the pretty coastal hamlet of Ravenglass around 12.40 for a break of up to four hours.

 

We have three optional excursions at discounted prices, which must be pre-booked at the same time as the main tour as availability is strictly limited:

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway: The delightful narrow gauge railway runs for 7 miles through spectacular Lake District scenery to Eskdale, situated at the foot of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike and the train will be hauled by one of the little steam engines dating back to 1894. At the lines terminus there is an excellent cafe and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Fells with riverside walks. Muncaster Castle Gardens & World Owl Centre: A road coach will take you on the short journey to the spectacular and imposing Muncaster Castle, dating from the 13th century with its dramatic backdrop of the glorious Lakeland Fells, time will be available to explore the beautiful Gardens and Owlery (the Castle itself is closed on Saturdays).  Adults: £8 Children: £5 St Bees or Whitehaven:  Travel along the coast on board a scheduled Northern Rail service for the 30 minute journey to visit either the beautiful village of St Bees, with walks to the headland or beach, and views across to the Isle of Man. Or, continue to the elegant Georgian town of Whitehaven with its ancient port, Marina & award winning Beacon Visitors Centre.

Premier Dining
Reserved seating is arranged in groups of 4 or 2 around a table in 1st class open carriages with additional legroom, wide seats and panoramic windows. A full English breakfast and a four course dinner will be prepared on board by our chefs and silver served at your reserved seat by liveried stewards. A full wine & drinks list is available with an ‘at seat’ service during the meals. Further refreshments during the journey may be purchased from the buffet bar.

Pullman Dining
This is the ultimate travel experience – seating is in our refurbished Pullman style umber & cream air conditioned wood panelled open carriages ‘Apollo’ & ‘Sovereign’ offering additional legroom, wide seats and panoramic windows with seating arranged in groups of 4 or 2 around a table laid with crisp linen and fully dressed with the finest crockery and glassware. The ticket price includes a reserved seat, glass of chilled bucks fizz followed by a full English breakfast and late morning tea/coffee service with pastries prior to the arrival at our destination. On the return journey you will be welcomed back on board with a glass of chilled champagne and a selection of tempting canapés will be served followed by a four course dinner with ¼ bottle of house wine, and coffee with petits fours. An ‘at seat’ drinks service is available for purchase throughout the day.
